FAQ about LASIK

What is LASIK surgery?

LASIK surgery is a kind of refractive surgery that corrects the eye disorders such as astigmatism, hyperopia and myopia. In LASIK surgery, the surgeon will create a thin flap of the corneal tissue using laser technology which enables the remodeling of the corneal tissue.

Is LASIK surgery painful?

No. Before doing the procedure, the surgeon will administer eye drops in order to numb the eye. The patients may experience some pressure on the eye while doing the surgery which lasts only about 15-20 seconds, but the patients do not feel any kind of discomfort during the surgery and alsoas well as after the procedure.

Can I treat both of my eyes on the same day?

Yes. Both the eyes can be done on the same day, but some patients prefer to do the surgery on different days. Doing the procedure on the same day avoids creating anthe imbalance between both eyes.

Am I the right candidate for the procedure?

The right candidate should of 18 years or above older with stable vision and healthy eyes. To know find out whether you are a right candidate or not, Dr. Nahim will examine your eyes thoroughly for the this type of eye disorder. The doctor also verifies whether you have any kind of health related problems that may affect your surgery such as diabetes, heart problems and other diseases.

What is the time taken to complete a LASIK surgery?

Normally, LASIK surgical procedure takes only 5-7 minutes for one eye and about 15-20 minutes for two eyes. LASIK surgery can be done easily and comfortably using an excimer laser procedure and often takes even less time when done by an experienced doctor such as Dr. Nahim.

Does the procedure have any upper age limit?

No. there is no upper age limits for the LASIK surgery, but the patients should not be suffering from cataract.

Are the effects of the procedure permanent?

Definitely, the effect of the procedure is for life-long after the healing period of initial 2-3 months. The only thing you have to do routine checkups regularly with your doctor so that you can maintain the eye healthy by detecting any kind of diseases or conditions which may develop during the process of aging. In some cases, additional procedures need to be done 10-15 years after the initial surgery.

Do I require contact lenses or reading glasses after the procedure?

Majority of the patients below 40 years old can read well without using any kind of glasses or contact lenses. But people above 40 years may require reading glasses to read fine print because people of in their mid 40s have a natural weakening of the eye muscles known as Presbyopia. Presbyopia cannot be corrected using LASIK procedure.

How many checkups are required after the surgery?

It depends up on the curing power of the patient. Majority of the patients should consult the doctor on the following day of the treatment and then for a minimum of 1 month to 3 months of checkups. Some of the patients need to visit the doctor more timeoften. Dr. Nahim will be available to you whenever you are in need of him.

How fast I can take a shower or bathe?

Dr. Nahim will advise specifically on this matter. Most probably you can bathe on the same day of the surgery, but should wait at least for two days to take a shower. Never rub the eyes after the surgery i.e. at least for one month.

When can I use the eye makeup?

After one or two weeks of the surgery, you can wear eye makeup. Dr. Nahim highly recommends that the patients should use new eye makeup, especially eye mascara in order to prevent the an infection after LASIK treatment.

How many days do I have to wait to start driving?

Never drive on the day of the surgical procedure. After the day of surgery, you can drive whenever you believe that you have a comfortable vision for safe driving.

Will there be any pain after the surgical procedure?

Most of the patients will experience a burning sensation or itching, but it will last only for 1-3 hours after the LASIK procedure. Sometimes you may feel a mild ache later on the day of the procedure. Majority of the people feel comfortable after if they takeing a nap immediately after the procedure.

How soon can I go for work?

Most of the patients can start working full day from the following day of the surgery. In rare cases only, one or two days are required. Dr. Nahim would recommend you to take a couple of days to rest, if you can.

What are the common side effects of LASIK procedure?

Some of the side effects that may occur to the patients are fluctuating vision, dry eyes and night glare. All these side effect will only last for first few weeks and then gradually disappears.

Is LASIK a safe procedure?

LASIK is popular because of its safety standards and - complications after a LASIK procedure is are rare. The rate of complications is very less small when compared to the long term use of contact lenses and other eye surgeries.

Is it possible to do a cataract surgery or other eye surgeries in the future, after LASIK surgery?

Yes. Even if you had undergone a LASIK surgery before, you can do cataract surgery. The surgeon takes care of the calculation differences of IOL’s power before performing the cataract surgery.

Is selection of the doctor important?

Definitely, choosing a doctor is very important in eye surgeries. Not every doctor can meet the requirement of LASIK surgery. Dr. Nahim is specialized in LASIK surgery and he is highly experienced and skilled. Numerous patient reviews can support this claim.

What is the difference between Custom LASIK and Conventional LASIK?

Conventional LASIK eye procedure will provide excellent results, but conventional LASIK procedure cannot correct unusual aberrations. But Custom Wavefront laser eye surgery can find high order aberrations and correct them without any further complications.

What happens if the patient moves the eyes or blink?

Patients who are undergoing a LASIK eye surgery will be lying on the back by looking at a flashing fixation light. At the time of the surgery, an eyelid opener will be used to keep the eyes open without blinking. Dr. Nahim is the person who controls the laser, so if the patient has any discomfort during the procedure, he will stop the procedure until the person can focus his/her eyes on the light.
