The History of Lasik At Boothe Laser Center
Lasik is a great and outstanding service of many doctors and scientists who have worked on this procedure for the last five decades. Since the early 90's, millions of people worldwide have already benefited from this laser eye surgery.
In the beginning of the 90's, Dr. Boothe, director of Boothe Laser Center was one of the pioneers of performing Lasik surgery in the nation and was the first eye surgeon in the area who started using an excimer laser approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. At the moment, he has already performed over 120,100 Lasik surgeries and over 70,150 IntraLasik procedures. But let us go back to the Fifties and look over a brief summary of the Lasik history from its beginning.
Lasik as a refractive surgery started in Columbia in 1950, when Spanish ophthalmologist Jose Barraquer invented a special tool for creating thin flap on the surface of eye cornea. Nowadays that tool is known as microkeratome.
Later in 1973, an Indian-born American scientist Mani Lal Bhaumik invented and patented the first excimer laser that is now commonly and successfully used for the reshaping of eye cornea during Lasik procedure.
In 1981, Rangaswamy Srinivasan, a scientist of IBM Research Laboratory, found out that the excimer laser can be used to cut a living tissue accurately without burning the surrounding tissue and later he used this method along with an eye surgeon during the surgery of cornea. Thus, the laser became an alternative to microkeratome.
On June 20, 1989, an American scientist Dr. Gholam A. Peyman received a patent for the development of a method of correcting refractive error with an excimer laser used beneath a corneal flap and today this method is commonly known as Lasik.
At Boothe Laser Center, the procedure is mainly blade-free, all-laser process performed with the help of special equipment. For example, Dr. William Boothe utilizes a combination of the latest and most technologically advanced equipment such as Intralase iFS Laser, Alcon LADARVision 4000, VISX STAR S4 Excimer Laser System and the Allegretto Wavelight Eye-Q Excimer Laser System at his laser center. The lasers utilized today are more accurate and quicker than they have ever been before. As technology develops, eye glasses and contact lenses may simply become useless thing of the past. Patient Reviews
There was no reason to fear
The first thing I want to do is express my gratitude to Dr. Boothe and the staff at Boothe Laser Center. During my visit at Boothe Eyecare I felt sympathy and understanding from the people who took care of me. At the center I replaced the crystalline lens in both of my eyes with Crystalens. I am very, very satisfied with result!
My vision was very poor and I had -14 in the left eye and -13 in the right one. The next day after the Crystalens procedure I had 0.6 vision in the left eye and 0.7 in the right eye. The result surprised even Dr. Boothe and his assistant. It was more than what we all expected!
It is true that I was shocked after the first consultation when Dr. Boothe said that I need to change my natural crystalline lenses. Dr. Boothe understood my feelings and tried to reassure me. I knew that I did not have any other choice. The assistant made an appointment for surgery and I am began the treatments.
The first procedure strengthened my retina - I almost felt nothing during this procedure, my eyes were numb from eye drops with an anesthetic. As Dr. Boothe promised, there was nothing to fear. The next surgery focused on replacing the crystalline lens. I was very nervous. Before surgery all was according to plan: changing clothes, dripping eyes, measuring the pressure. The surgery itself went great. Boothe Laser Center and their nurses always commentated what they will do next and this decreased my fear. After surgery I rested and was then check before I was allowed to go home and rest. Five hours later I could see well but with a small mist clouding some of the vision. The next morning my vision was wonderful!
Thank you for your individual sincere attention to each patient. As long as you follow the post-op instructions, you can achieve my results.
Grandpa's vision a progressively restored.
I found the Boothe Laser Center by chance. I went online, read about it and decided to take my grandfather there. After consultation with one of the doctors he diagnosed my grandpa has cataract, what we had suspected for a while. He explained that he will need to replace the crystalline lens of both of his eyes. My grandfather is a little more then 80 years old. I was nervous how he will react to the surgery but Dr. Boothe met with him and patiently explained how he treats his patients by using a special individual vision “map”.
Now it has all passed. The surgery went as planned, one eye first, then we waited a month and did the other. My grandfather's vision is being progressively restored. I want to highlight their personnel's patience and the famous Texan politeness (we are from Ardmore, OK). I liked the way they operate. There was a bit of waiting on the first day we came, we later found out it is better to come in the mornings on weekdays. My mother wants to go there too, she has astigmatism that she wants to get rid of. Very calm atmosphere - not tiring for elderly patients!
